& h e l i n ä  |  Australia collection
My first collection is inspired by stunning Australia. Through traveling this beautiful country, as well as during my everyday life, I have taken countless numbers of photos which are the foundation to my drawings, which I pair with fabrics.
Ultimately I create a product that I feel comfortable branding:

Bush tucker

Bush tucker &helinä
The healing herbs.

Bush tucker, also called bushfood, is any food native to Australia and used as sustenance by the original inhabitants, the Aboriginal Australians, but it can also describe any native fauna or flora used for culinary and/or medicinal purposes, regardless of the continent or culture.

I did an Aborginal art workshop during my second year in Australia. I also learned more about Aborginal culture and about bush food. As of day one I knew that bush tucker would be the name of one of my prints. It is like a ”must” in my Australian collection. In fact, this print is my first one. It makes me smile every time I watch it, as if it is healing my mood at the same time.

I am printing this pattern on the cotton/linnen fabric.

Rusty red sand

A very special place in central Australia is the Red Centre. And yes it is really true: the earth and rocks of the Red Centre are … red. Spectacularly so. One of Australia’s most iconic natural landmarks is Uluru, the unforgettable monolith, an enormous sandstone. Uluru have great cultural significance for the Aṉangu people, the traditional inhabitants of the area.
Uluru is notable for appearing to change colour at different times of the day and year, most notably when it glows red at dawn and sunset.

The rusty red sand print is my interpretation of the magical “red” feelings.

Uluruloru

Uluru, in the centre of Australia, is home to an abundance of springs, waterholes, rock caves and ancient paintings.
When we visited there with my husband, we started to feel the magic already when the plane landed in Alice Springs. Everywhere we experienced this magic in the air: dining under a canopy of stars; riding on camels in the dessert; hearing out the frogs singing after rain; or driving by car from Alice Springs to Kings Canyon, seeing hardly any other cars, hours and hours without network.
This print represent what I felt when experiencing this magic place. The dots in the pattern represent short stories; in Finnish: "loru"

Mosaic Pacific

There's many places in Sydney where I found mosaic street art. So I thought to make such a mosaic pattern myself, with some of the very special colours found in the South Pacific:

Blue/Turquoise: crystal clear waters. Blue Skys. Turquoise sea. Blue sea. Or what is it? Beautiful. There's also the "Blue Mountains" , west of Sydney. The colouring, significantly less blue the closer you get, is caused by Eucalyptus oil evaporating from the countless gumtrees in the national parks.
Green: evokes the forests, wine regions, and pastures of the Australian landscape. Green is also one of Australia's national floral emblem.
White: the whitest sand. Clean, untouched beaches. They say it's paradise. Maybe not, but it comes pretty close I think.
Black: bushfires are quite common in Australia. I have seen the damage these fires can cause.

Kangaroos

Stacks Image 157
The kangaroo is a symbol of Australia and appears on the Australian coat of arms and on some of its currency. Also the kangaroo is used in the logo's of some of Australia's most iconic companies, including Qantas and the Royal Australian Air Force. The kangaroo is important to both Australian culture and the national image, and consequently there are numerous popular culture references.

Kangaroos are the only large animals to use hopping as a means of locomotion.

Kangaroos provide fur, meat and sinew and are commonly an integral part of aboriginal lore.

For my prints I wanted to draw a moving, hopping kangaroo. Its very cute to see them in action.

Flower Power

Stacks Image 133
Australia is covered with the glorious and varied colours of an abundance of wildflowers. Each state and territory has its own flower, and Australia has its own national flower. As you drive through the Australian countryside, you are sure to spot many of these native flowers.
Not only there's an overwhelming variety of colours, there's also many different fragrancies.

Based on my pictures, I drew many imaginary flowers, and only some of them are shown here.

Fabrics and Products
The Flower Power patterns (they may differ from what's shown here) will be printed on cotton/canvas and various slik and viscose fabrics.
There will be bags and scarves.
